How to Learn is a curated, filterable directory of the resources that actually help people learn a language — apps, podcasts, YouTube channels, courses, books, dictionaries and communities — matched to your target language, level and goals.
Why it exists
Searching "best app to learn Spanish" gets you a wall of affiliate listicles that all recommend the same handful of apps. How to Learn is the opposite: a hand-picked stack per language, honest about what each resource is good at, who it's for, and where it falls short — so you can spend your time learning instead of comparing.
How it's curated
Every entry is something a serious learner would genuinely recommend. We note the level range, the skills it builds (listening, speaking, reading, grammar and so on), and whether it's free, freemium or paid — colour-coded so you can see the cost at a glance. We currently cover 79 languages and 1494+ resources, and the list keeps growing.
Independent & honest
How to Learn is independently curated. There are no affiliate links and no paid placements — the ordering reflects usefulness, not sponsorship. Free and freemium resources are surfaced first because cost matters when you're starting out.
Suggestions welcome
Know a resource that belongs here, or spot something out of date? Suggestions are genuinely welcome — this is a living directory, and the best recommendations often come from learners in the middle of the journey.
The data behind this site is open
Every resource listed here lives in a public dataset — github.com/eyalev/language-learning-resources — as JSON and CSV under CC BY 4.0. It is the same data this site is built from, not an export of it, so corrections made there show up here. Spotted something wrong or missing? That is the place to say so.
Your privacy
Conversations with the on-site learning assistant are stored without an IP address or an account, and are used to improve which languages and resources this directory covers. Everything the site records is listed on the privacy page.
