Learning styles
Also known as VAK, visual/auditory/kinaesthetic learners, the meshing hypothesis
People do have preferences about how material is presented. Matching teaching to those preferences does not improve learning.
The claim That each learner has a style — visual, auditory, kinaesthetic — and learns better when instruction is delivered in that style.

This is the most widely believed idea in education that the evidence does not support, and it is worth being precise about which part is wrong. People certainly differ in what they prefer. They also differ in prior knowledge, interest and ability, all of which matter. The claim at issue is narrower: that identifying a learner's style and matching instruction to it improves how much they learn. That is the meshing hypothesis, and it is the part that fails.
Pashler, McDaniel, Rohrer and Bjork set out in 2008 exactly what evidence would settle it. You need a crossover interaction: learners sorted by style, randomly assigned to matched or mismatched instruction, with the matched groups outperforming the mismatched ones in both directions. Anything less is compatible with one method simply being better for everyone. They reviewed the literature and found essentially no studies with that design supporting the hypothesis — and several with it that found nothing.
The belief remains close to universal regardless. A 2020 systematic review by Newton and Salvi found around 89% of educators endorsing the idea across the studies surveyed. It survives because it is flattering, intuitive, and — crucially — because it makes a prediction that never gets tested: a learner told they are a visual learner who then does well concludes the label was right.
The most useful replacement is that the best presentation depends on the material, not the person. Geography is visual for everyone; pronunciation is auditory for everyone; the moves of a dance are kinaesthetic for everyone. Willingham's version of this is that you should teach in the modality the content is actually in, and that this has nothing to do with who is in the room.
There is one real harm beyond wasted effort. A style label is a ceiling with a friendly face: told they are 'not a verbal learner', a student has been handed a permanent reason not to try the thing they find hard, and the things people find hard are usually the things they most need to practise.
What to do differently
- Choose the presentation that fits the material, not the label you have been given for yourself.
- Use several modalities for the same content when you can — not because it matches a style, but because more routes in generally help everyone.
- Treat a preference as a preference. Enjoying diagrams is a real fact about you and not a prescription about how you learn best.
- Be suspicious of any assessment that sorts you into a learning type, especially a paid one.
- If you were told you are a certain kind of learner and have avoided a whole mode of study since, that is the thing worth reconsidering first.
Limits and trade-offs
- 'Debunked' applies to the meshing hypothesis, not to every claim about individual differences. Learners genuinely do differ, in ways that matter — just not in the way the styles industry sells.
- Absence of supporting evidence is not the same as proof of no effect. A small matching effect could exist and be too small to have shown up; nobody has found it in thirty years of looking.
- The debunking is sometimes overapplied to attack any use of varied media, which the evidence supports rather than opposes.
- Telling a learner their framework is a myth is not neutral. If the label is the reason someone believes they can learn at all, the correction needs to arrive with a replacement.
What this means for a language
You will meet this constantly in language advice: that you are an auditory learner and should skip reading, or a visual learner and should stick to apps with pictures. A language demands every modality, because it is every modality — a sound system, a writing system, a set of motor habits in your mouth, a body of meaning. Skipping the mode you like least is how people end up understanding a language they cannot say a word of, or reading fluently and freezing at the first conversation. What is true, and gets confused with this, is that different goals need different diets: if you only ever want to read, read.
