Sleep and memory

Sleep is not a pause between study sessions. It is when a large part of the learning actually happens.

Good evidence The active-consolidation account is well supported across human and animal work; the size of the benefit for classroom-style learning in ordinary adults is less settled than the popular coverage implies.
For most of the twentieth century, the standard explanation for why sleep helps memory was passive: you are asleep, so nothing new is coming in to interfere. The modern account, reviewed at length by Rasch and Born in 2013, is that something is being done. During sleep — particularly slow-wave sleep — recently encoded patterns are replayed, and in the process moved and restructured, integrating them with what you already knew.
Two consequences follow that a passive account cannot explain. Memories after sleep are not merely better preserved, they are sometimes different: more generalised, more available for use in new situations, occasionally reorganised into a rule the learner never consciously extracted. And the benefit is selective — material tagged as important, or expected to be tested, is preferentially consolidated.
The practical shape of this is that the last hour before sleep is unusually valuable study time, and the hours of sleep after it are part of the session rather than the end of it. Cutting sleep to add study hours is therefore not a neutral trade; you are spending the mechanism to buy more raw material for it.
It is worth being careful about how much this licenses. Much of the sharpest evidence comes from tightly controlled tasks — finger-tapping sequences, word pairs, visual discrimination — in sleep laboratories, often with young adults and sometimes with sleep deprivation as the manipulation. The step from 'a nap improved recall of a word list' to 'you will learn a language faster if you sleep more' is a real inferential leap, and the honest position is that the direction is well established and the magnitude for everyday learning is not.
One popular claim does not survive at all: learning during sleep. Attempts to teach new material to a sleeping person have consistently failed. What works is cueing something already learned — playing a sound or a smell associated with the material during slow-wave sleep — which strengthens consolidation of that memory but teaches nothing new.
What to do differently
- Treat sleep as part of the study plan, not as its opportunity cost. An hour of study bought with an hour of sleep is usually a bad trade.
- Put the material you most want to keep in the last session before bed.
- Prefer study spread across several days over the same hours in one — partly for spacing, partly because each night does consolidation work.
- When something will not come together, stop and sleep on it. Reorganisation during sleep is one of the few plausible mechanisms behind the cliché.
- Do not buy sleep-learning products. Cueing existing memories works; acquiring new material while asleep does not.
Limits and trade-offs
- Most of the crisp evidence is from laboratory tasks and short retention intervals; extrapolating it to months of self-directed study is an extrapolation.
- Effect sizes vary widely between studies and between people, and some well-run experiments find no sleep benefit for the task they used.
- It is advice that is easy to give and hard to take. People short of sleep are usually short of it for reasons study advice cannot fix.
- The popular literature on this is much more confident than the research literature, and some of the most quoted claims come from books rather than papers.
What this means for a language
The most defensible application is scheduling: a short session before bed, and a night of sleep between meeting a set of words and reviewing them, sit well with both this literature and the spacing one. The interesting and much less certain part is what consolidation might do for the pattern-finding side of language — the way grammar you never studied explicitly starts to feel right after enough exposure looks like the kind of overnight generalisation this research describes, but that connection is suggestive rather than demonstrated, and this site would rather say so than imply an experiment exists.
