What it actually is

Mihalis Eleftheriou records real lessons with a real student and walks you through constructing the language yourself using cognates and logic — Spanish, French, Italian, German, Greek, Turkish, Arabic and Swahili are covered. Completely free, no ads, no sign-up, funded by donations. The Spanish course in particular is one of the most recommended free resources anywhere; the trade-off is small vocabulary and no reading or writing practice.

Who it suits

Complete beginners who want to understand how a language is built and start producing sentences out loud from the first lesson, without paying anything. It fits commuters and people who learn by reasoning rather than memorising, and it is best as a first course before moving on to input-heavy or conversation-based study.

Who should skip it

Learners who want a full path to fluency: only some courses are complete, Complete German is explicitly unfinished, and Japanese and British Sign Language are still in development. There is no reading, writing or drill work, and the pace depends on you pausing and answering aloud, so passive listening gets you much less. Intermediate learners will find most of it too basic.

What it costs

Free: the site states there are no price tags, adverts or sign-ups for any course. Language Transfer runs on donations via Patreon or PayPal, and all courses play in its free app or on SoundCloud and YouTube.

    Pick Michel Thomas instead if you want the same think-aloud format in a language Language Transfer does not cover, such as Japanese, Portuguese or Russian.

    Pick Pimsleur instead if you want spaced recall of set phrases and a longer structured audio course, and are willing to pay for it.

  • Dreaming Spanish

    Pick Dreaming Spanish instead if your main goal is understanding spoken Spanish, which needs far more listening than this course gives.
