What it actually is
Hans Ørberg's Familia Romana starts with a sentence you can understand knowing no Latin at all and never uses another language, building grammar and vocabulary by context and pictures across thirty-five chapters. It is the single most recommended way into Latin among people who actually end up reading Latin, and the reason is that you finish it able to read rather than able to parse. Slow at first; the pay-off arrives around chapter ten.
