What it actually is

Same idea as HelloTalk but with vetted profiles and one-to-one partner matching rather than a social feed, which makes it noticeably less spammy in practice. Texting partners is free; calling them in the app is part of the paid Pro tier, and the app also sells paid tutors. Both apps live or die on finding one or two committed partners, so expect to message a lot of people before anything sticks.

Who it suits

Learners who already have a base (roughly A2 and up) and need real conversation with native speakers but cannot or will not pay for lessons. It works best if you treat it as a scheduling tool: find two or three partners who match your time zone and interests, then move to regular voice or video sessions with a fixed half-and-half language split.

Who should skip it

Beginners who cannot yet hold a basic exchange will find partners drift away quickly, and nobody on the other side is trained to correct you systematically. Tandem's own help centre lists direct audio and video calls, unlimited translations and more daily new contacts among the Pro features, so the free tier is thinner than the app's pitch suggests. If you want structured feedback, a paid tutor is the better use of time.

What it costs

The core app is free. Tandem Pro is an in-app subscription in 1-, 3- or 12-month terms; the US App Store listed the 12-month plan at US$69.99 on 2026-09-29. Prices for the shorter terms and for other countries are shown only in the app and vary by store and region.
