Preply
Large tutor marketplace with subscription-style lesson packages.
What it actually is
100,000+ tutors across 120+ subjects, with a free replacement if your first tutor is a bad fit. The main structural difference from italki is that Preply pushes weekly lesson subscriptions and takes a large commission from tutors, which some learners consider a reason to prefer italki. Worth comparing side by side for your language — prices, availability and tutor quality differ per market rather than per platform.
Who it suits
Learners who know they need a fixed weekly slot with one tutor to stay consistent, for example working adults preparing for a move, an exam or a job. The subscription model is a commitment device, and that is its real value.
Who should skip it
Skip it if your schedule is unpredictable: lessons you have not scheduled expire when the 28-day cycle renews, so a busy month wastes money. It is also a poor fit if you want to sample many tutors cheaply, since each tutor needs its own subscription.
What it costs
Tutors set their own rates, so there is no single price. Trials are paid, 25 or 50 minutes, one per tutor. After that you subscribe per tutor: at least 4 lessons every 28 days at the tutor's rate, with no cancellation fee; unscheduled lessons do not carry over.
