Every entry gives the word in Urdu, Devanagari and roman script with an English gloss, pronunciation audio, and — the part nothing else has — couplets showing the word in real literary use. That triple-script display solves a specific problem: most learners can say more Urdu than they can read, and this lets you look a word up from whichever form you met it in.

The scholarly Urdu dictionary, free and searchable from Chicago's DSAL.

John Platts's 1884 dictionary, digitised by the Digital South Asia Library, remains the reference work for Urdu etymology and for reading anything written before about 1950. It marks Persian, Arabic and Sanskrit origins, which is how you start predicting a word's register rather than memorising it. Wrong tool for modern conversational vocabulary — use Rekhta for that.

Over 100 language editions; the English edition alone has millions of entries covering hundreds of languages, with IPA, declension and conjugation tables, etymologies and usage notes that commercial apps usually paywall. The etymology sections are quietly one of the best vocabulary-retention tools available. Being crowd-sourced, coverage is uneven and rare entries can be wrong — cross-check anything unusual against a native-language dictionary.
