🇳🇱 The best media for learning Dutch

A low-key illustrated soap opera from LearnDutch.org that follows a cast through everyday Dutch life, narrated slowly and clearly with both Dutch and English subtitles. It exists to fill the gap where textbook audio is too easy but Dutch television is still impossible, and it does that job better than most graded readers. Completely free. The animation is static and the production basic — you are here for the language, not the drama.

Thousands of public-domain books recorded by volunteers, downloadable as MP3 or M4B with no account. Pairing a LibriVox recording with the matching free Project Gutenberg text gives you a full audiobook-plus-ebook study set for nothing. Two caveats: recordings are volunteer-quality and vary a lot reader to reader, and everything is out of copyright, so the language is often a century old — great for literature, poor for modern slang.

The children's news bulletin explains the day's events in straightforward language with lots of visual context, and the website carries written articles alongside the video. It is a natural step up once the Journaal in Makkelijke Taal feels easy. Be aware it is not a learner product: the delivery runs at normal Dutch speed and covers more stories per episode, so it is harder than its target age suggests. Free and updated every weekday.

NOS makes a proper news programme for people still learning Dutch: three stories in about ten minutes, simpler vocabulary, and a presenter who explains background calmly instead of assuming it. It airs daily at 17:00 on NPO 1 and every episode stays online at NPO Start. This is the single best free listening resource for the A2–B1 gap, because it is real news rather than learner-fiction. Some NPO Start streams are restricted outside the Netherlands.

Dutch professors give short, well-produced lectures on sleep science, neurology, technology, history and law, released free as both video and podcast. For advanced learners it is the natural next step after news: structured argument, abstract vocabulary and a single clear speaker rather than crosstalk. Completely free, with subtitles available on the video versions. It is made for Dutch native speakers, so specialist terminology comes without explanation.

VRT's news service is the reference register for spoken Flemish: clearly articulated standard Belgian Dutch across daily television bulletins, radio and a large free article archive. Most Dutch courses train you exclusively on Netherlands Dutch, so this is how you stop being thrown by Flemish vowels and vocabulary. Free online. It is native-targeted news at full speed, so it belongs at B1 and above — start with Wablieft if that is still too fast.

A franchise of local producers filming unscripted street interviews, each episode subtitled in the target language and English, which is the closest free thing to hearing how people genuinely speak. All YouTube episodes are free; membership adds transcripts, vocabulary lists and exercises. Real-speed unscripted speech is hard early on — start with the slower 'Super Easy' episodes if you are below B1.

A Flemish easy-language newspaper written for adults who find standard press Dutch hard, whether they are learners, low-literate readers or older people. Short sentences and everyday vocabulary, but real reporting rather than simplified filler. Articles are readable free on the news site; the printed weekly and school packs are subscription products. Because it is Flemish it also gives you Belgian spelling and word choice, which differs from Netherlands Dutch in small but noticeable ways.

A streaming service where every show has clickable dual subtitles and saved words become flashcards, covering 15 languages with apps on phone, Roku and TV. It solves the 'what do I watch' problem for languages where Netflix's catalogue is thin. The library is much smaller than a mainstream streamer and it is subscription-only — if you already pay for Netflix, Language Reactor's free tier does most of the same job.
