The best-known free Dutch video curriculum: 1000 common words plus 50 grammar lessons.

Bart de Pau's free video series are the closest thing Dutch has to a canonical beginner course — '1000 most common Dutch words' for vocabulary and a 50-lesson #dutchgrammar track, all structured and cheerfully presented. The paid side is his Dutch Summer School and Winter School language camps plus small-group virtual classrooms on Zoom. The free videos genuinely stand alone; you never have to buy anything to finish the beginner path. Uploads slowed noticeably during 2026, so treat it as a finished library rather than an active channel.

The strongest single Dutch teaching channel running: Kim explains grammar and everyday phrases almost entirely in Dutch, slowly and with on-screen text, so you get comprehensible input and instruction at the same time. New videos land roughly every other Friday and she was still publishing in August 2026. Free on YouTube; her site sells self-paced courses and workbooks for people who want a structured path. Best from late A1 onward — absolute beginners may want a bilingual course alongside it.

Unscripted interviews at native speed, plus 'Super Easy Dutch' episodes where the hosts slow right down for beginners, all dual-subtitled so one video serves several levels. This is the fastest way to hear how Dutch is actually spoken rather than how textbooks write it. Videos are free and still weekly in 2026; membership adds interactive transcripts, vocabulary lists and exercises. The regular episodes are genuinely hard below B1 — start with the Super Easy ones.

A comprehensible-input channel in the Dreaming Spanish mould: Noelle talks through ordinary topics — shopping, home renovation, daily routines — in Dutch pitched at a stated level, using visuals and gesture instead of English translation. Videos are explicitly labelled complete-beginner, intermediate or int/advanced so you can pick your difficulty. Free, and publishing steadily through 2026. The library is still young (started 2025), so there is less here than for comparable Spanish or French channels.

One of the most-recommended Dutch listening podcasts: single-host episodes entirely in Dutch, spoken deliberately slowly, on subjects like the Afsluitdijk, Urk's fishermen and Dutch wartime history. The slow delivery makes it usable well before you can handle native podcasts. Listening is free and the show reached episode 56 by 2026, though it publishes irregularly. Transcripts are sold separately in sets of ten rather than given away, which is the main catch.

Robin van der Markt narrates Dutch history, culture and current affairs in careful but natural Dutch, and — unusually — puts a free transcript with every single episode. That combination makes it the best value listening resource for learners crossing from A2 into B1. Over ninety episodes exist and it was still publishing in mid-2026. It is aimed squarely at B1/B2; below that the sentence length will outrun you even at the slower pace.

NOS makes a proper news programme for people still learning Dutch: three stories in about ten minutes, simpler vocabulary, and a presenter who explains background calmly instead of assuming it. It airs daily at 17:00 on NPO 1 and every episode stays online at NPO Start. This is the single best free listening resource for the A2–B1 gap, because it is real news rather than learner-fiction. Some NPO Start streams are restricted outside the Netherlands.

The children's news bulletin explains the day's events in straightforward language with lots of visual context, and the website carries written articles alongside the video. It is a natural step up once the Journaal in Makkelijke Taal feels easy. Be aware it is not a learner product: the delivery runs at normal Dutch speed and covers more stories per episode, so it is harder than its target age suggests. Free and updated every weekday.

A low-key illustrated soap opera from LearnDutch.org that follows a cast through everyday Dutch life, narrated slowly and clearly with both Dutch and English subtitles. It exists to fill the gap where textbook audio is too easy but Dutch television is still impossible, and it does that job better than most graded readers. Completely free. The animation is static and the production basic — you are here for the language, not the drama.

The Dutch arm of the Innovative Language network: hundreds of short audio and video lessons, each built around a dialogue that gets broken down line by line, plus transcripts and word banks. It is strong for beginners who want listening volume and cheap at the lower tiers, running roughly $4–$47/month depending on plan. Two real caveats: the catalogue is organised chaotically for newcomers, and the progression thins out badly past upper-intermediate. Best as a supplement, not your only course.

A free Dutch learner's dictionary with clearly written definitions, synonyms, pronunciation and example sentences, plus a good section on idioms and sayings. Since Van Dale withdrew its free online dictionary at the end of 2025 this has become the practical default for looking up a Dutch word in Dutch. It is ad-free and searchable by word fragments. The definitions come largely from Kernerman rather than a Dutch academic corpus, so for fine shades of meaning check the ANW too.

Van Dale has been the reference Dutch dictionary since 1874 and remains the one Dutch editors and teachers actually cite. Note the change that catches people out: the free online dictionary was withdrawn on 10 December 2025 and everything now sits behind Van Dale Online. There is a learner-priced tier, Van Dale Online NT2, at about €4.99 a year, with the professional plan nearer €7.50 a month. Only worth paying for if you need bilingual depth or write Dutch professionally — otherwise woorden.org and the ANW cover most needs free.

De Boer, Van der Kamp and Pentermann's course is what most Dutch university and serious evening-class programmes put in front of educated adult beginners, taking you from nothing to a solid A2 with communicative exercises, grammar video and pronunciation support. The revised edition costs around €51.50 including a year's online licence. It is the entry point to a well-built ladder — Nederlands in actie, op niveau, naar perfectie and naar de top run on to C1. It assumes a classroom or at least a tutor; pure self-study with it is hard going.

TU Delft's method inverts the normal classroom — you do the listening and text preparation in your own time, and lesson time is reserved entirely for talking. It teaches high-frequency vocabulary inside carefully written texts rather than through grammar tables, and runs in separate strands for theoretically and practically educated learners across 0–A2, A2–B1 and B1–B2. Widely used in Dutch universities and companies. The trade-off is that it is deliberately light on explicit grammar, which frustrates learners who want rules stated up front.

Free on desktop, Android and web; the iOS app is a one-off paid purchase that funds the project. One-on-one video lessons from roughly $5–30/hr depending on the language and the teacher's credentials. It is the single fastest way to get real speaking practice, and the reason most self-study plans stall is that they skip this step. Community tutors are cheap conversation partners; professional teachers are worth it if you want structure, homework and error correction.

Duolingo

The free tier is genuinely usable (ads plus a limited 'hearts' system); Super removes both for about $96/yr. Its real value is streak-driven consistency for absolute beginners, and the smaller courses are thin machine-assisted content rather than the polished Spanish or French trees. Treat it as a warm-up habit, not a curriculum — nobody reaches conversational fluency on Duolingo alone.

Babbel

Subscription-only after a handful of free intro lessons, typically $10–15/month with big discounts on annual plans. Lessons are short, dialogue-first and explain grammar properly, which makes it a much more serious beginner course than Duolingo. It covers only 13 languages and effectively stops around B1, so it is a stepping stone rather than a destination.

Thirty-minute audio lessons force you to produce sentences out loud before you see anything written, which builds unusually good accent and recall. Subscriptions run about $15–21/month (all-access covers 50+ languages), and older courses are often available through public libraries. It is slow and vocabulary-light by design, so pair it with reading — but for commute or walking time it is the best use of otherwise dead hours.

The free tier caps how many saved words you can keep, so serious use means paying (~$13/month or less annually). The interface is clunky and the built-in SRS is weaker than Anki, but the reading-plus-audio workflow with 50+ languages is hard to replicate elsewhere.

The 'learn with locals' video clips are the distinguishing feature — you hear real people at real speed rather than TTS. Be aware that Memrise moved user-created community courses off the main app in 2024 onto a separate site, which gutted what many long-time users valued most, and the app has leaned hard into AI chat features since. Fine as a phrase-and-vocabulary app for major languages; if you came for the community decks, use Anki instead.

The free tier is limited to core lessons; Premium unlocks grammar, offline and the full path. A solid Babbel alternative if you specifically want writing practice with human feedback.

Sentences are crowd-sourced and occasionally awkward or oddly specific, and it teaches nothing about grammar explicitly.

Modern assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) will roleplay a scenario at your level, correct your writing with explanations, generate graded reading, and hold voice conversations — endlessly patient and available at 2am, which no tutor is. Free tiers are enough for text practice; voice modes generally need a subscription. The caveats are real: models are noticeably weaker and more error-prone in lower-resource languages, they tend to produce bland textbook register rather than how people actually speak, and they will not correct you unless you explicitly ask them to.

Over 100 language editions; the English edition alone has millions of entries covering hundreds of languages, with IPA, declension and conjugation tables, etymologies and usage notes that commercial apps usually paywall. The etymology sections are quietly one of the best vocabulary-retention tools available. Being crowd-sourced, coverage is uneven and rare entries can be wrong — cross-check anything unusual against a native-language dictionary.

A streaming service where every show has clickable dual subtitles and saved words become flashcards, covering 15 languages with apps on phone, Roku and TV. It solves the 'what do I watch' problem for languages where Netflix's catalogue is thin. The library is much smaller than a mainstream streamer and it is subscription-only — if you already pay for Netflix, Language Reactor's free tier does most of the same job.

LibriVox

Free public-domain audiobooks in 40+ languages, read by volunteers.

Thousands of public-domain books recorded by volunteers, downloadable as MP3 or M4B with no account. Pairing a LibriVox recording with the matching free Project Gutenberg text gives you a full audiobook-plus-ebook study set for nothing. Two caveats: recordings are volunteer-quality and vary a lot reader to reader, and everything is out of copyright, so the language is often a century old — great for literature, poor for modern slang.

Speak

AI speaking partner that makes you talk out loud every session.

Unlike most apps it is built around producing speech: you repeat, roleplay and converse with an AI tutor that gives pronunciation and phrasing feedback in real time. Covers Spanish, French, Korean, Japanese, Italian and Chinese for English speakers, with a 7-day trial then a subscription (roughly $20/month or $99/yr). Good for overcoming the fear of speaking before your first human lesson, but an AI will not push back or drift off-script the way a real conversation partner does.
