The FSI method is drill-heavy and unusually rigorous about morphology, which suits Hungarian's suffix system well. The recordings are decades old, so audio quality is poor and some vocabulary is dated. Free, though the site pushes its paid tutoring alongside.

DW's classic beginner audio course follows two journalists through a light mystery plot while a narrator explains vocabulary and grammar in English between scenes. Being audio-first makes it usable while commuting, which is rare for true-beginner material. Free with downloadable manuscripts and worksheets; it's an older production and sounds it, but the pedagogy is solid.

Mark Thomson's beginner course drips new words in through repeated contextual examples so you infer meaning rather than translate, and it introduces the case system gently instead of dumping six tables on you. Episodes, notes and extra practice audio are all free on the site — one of the best zero-cost starting points for Russian. It stops at a solid A1/A2, so you'll need a follow-on course afterwards.

A new and small show — eighteen episodes as of August 2026, still publishing — in which Eslam takes a handful of Egyptian Arabic words or a short phrase and repeats them slowly enough to shadow. There is no curriculum and no transcript, so treat it as drill material alongside a course rather than as one. It earns its place because material this slow in Egyptian rather than Modern Standard is genuinely scarce.
